You recently discovered watercolor so you...

Google how to ‘watercolor x for beginners’

BUT you find out that ‘beginner’ is a broad word online and some tutorials are still not pegged at your level leaving you discouraged and unmotivated.

You question your ability to create as you spend time sifting through the next best ‘beginner friendly’ tutorial in the hope that you can finally paint something you are proud of

Considered investing in a watercolor course or better quality painting materials

BUT you are not ready to invest hundreds of dollars into a course and materials when you can access the buffet of online materials that offer you a multitude of ways of paint from various talented artists.

You aren’t sure if the investment is worth it especially if you are just beginning even though you value structure and feedback to help you learn

Decide to journal your art journey by creating a social media account

BUT you discovered that showing up online has led to increasing feelings of self-doubt around your own progress.

You start to focus on the wrong metrics for your progress, prioritizing ‘likes’ and scrolling through someone else’s progress. Plus, there is little genuine feedback beyond ‘likes’ about where to progress next. There is also bubbling feelings of comparison every time you post a piece of art

"...I really liked how you explained strokes and I couldn't love my stroke brushes any more. Game changer!!! It gave me more confidence that I could make a floral shape even with something that I thought was "ruined"

- Erin

"I am happy that I am learning new skills like how I use and manipulate brushes esp the large brushes as I've never tried painting large (larger than A5) before. I am developing in my understanding of composition, depth using varied value, and colour palette. I don't know if I am improving but I think I am gaining confidence in my approach to florals, I am relying less on copying and using more independent thinking by applying what I've learned in Brush Movement."

- Evelyn

"I found your tips on water and paint ratio very helpful. I actually started off with vintage florals and couldn't understand why I had those weird edges but now I do! And also, 1 get what you mean about using a formula to paint cos after painting with some workshops, I can only paint one particular flower but I realised I can't actually visualise how to paint other flowers to complement it on my own. But your workshop was helpful in learning how to do that and the tips are helpful for landscape too."

- Serene

"I did take away a VERY valuable suggestion which is ALREADY reaping a very different feel in my painting...NOT holding the brush at the ferule. There is a sense of freedom holding the brush higher up and utilizing the movement of the arm. THANK YOU. I am practicing this and I can see how this can lead to "looser" florals."

I’ll be honest with you:

Being self taught only has its perks in the beginning

When I started out as a watercolor newbie in 2016, I felt excited by the array of available content on painting without needing to fork out money to attend a paid workshop/course.

Investing in a watercolor workshop or course was the last thing on my mind as I was completely new and dabbling in this newfound "hobby" - plus I’d rather spend on supplies instead of a course.

I thought that by purchasing the art supplies that ‘google’ recommended and having my laptop handy - I could easily learn watercolor on my own

I thought that by purchasing the art supplies that ‘google’ recommended and having my laptop handy - I could easily learn watercolor on my own

But then...

The more tutorials I followed, the more overwhelmed I got.

My self-esteem took a hit as I found my art looking different despite following step by step tutorials that were labelled “beginner friendly”.

I started to question myself and wonder “how is it that following a step by step tutorial or something for ‘beginners’ still cannot get me the results I want?”

To make matters worse, I noticed there were gaps in the information and
conflicting information about similar topics

Despite learning more about watercolor online, I found it increasingly frustrating and difficult to piece together knowledge.

Plus, trying to apply them on my own painting proved tricky especially when I was not sure which source of knowledge was reliable.

I fell into the trap of spending more time on my device scrolling and comparing instead of doing actual creating.

In an attempt to get feedback and clarity on whether I was on the right track -
I started an instagram account to post my art.

I posted often and started to connect with like-minded beginning artists.

Overtime, My art got noticed by others on social media (yay!) and I started to get requests for custom work. Even though these were exciting opportunities to get my art sold

I feel like an impostor

I did not feel like I could sell my art because I was uncertain about whether my art was ‘worthy’ considering some of them were ‘inspired’ by other artists.

Can I call myself an artist?

I did not feel like I could sell my art because I was uncertain about whether my art was ‘worthy’ considering some of them were ‘inspired’ by other artists.

Can I call myself an artist?

So I tried...

To paint flowers on my own and get off scrolling for inspiration and tutorials (but I struggled to translate what I had in my head on paper - my paintings often turned out so different from what I had in mind.

I grew discouraged that the time I spent binging online in the hope of gaining confidence painting were not helpful in painting something I could feel proud of.

Investing in better (more expensive) materials in the hope that these would give me better results (but I ended up getting pressure of performing better because of the higher price tag in the materials I bought - leading to more anxiety instead of confidence.

I also started to doubt my ability to ‘live up’ to these materials as they started to collect dust on my desk)

Joining free watercolor groups/ putting my art on social media in the hope of getting feedback and validation for my art (but I was surrounded by either artist of similar levels or artist whose artwork were beyond what I could ever be - who could not offer more than ‘likes’ to my art.

I also fell into the rabbit hole of comparing my art with theirs wondering ‘when will I ever
paint like X’)

I told myself:
There must be a better way to learn watercolor without sacrificing my precious
self-worth and time

And that's when it hit me...

I was painting from someone else’s imagination all this while.

I needed to start painting something in front of me.

And that's when it hit me...

I was painting from someone else’s imagination all this while.

I needed to start painting something in front of me.

I moved away from ‘learning from others’ to tuning into what I already knew and had

And this time, I finally started to see progress in my art:

I started a personal project of 100 days of painting flowers in 2022 where I based all my paintings off reference books instead of tutorials. I am currently on my 2nd year doing this project!

I set a personal rule of not buying more supplies and focused on connecting with my existing supplies and surprised myself when I discovered that I enjoyed painting with florals with a flat brush.

I became more selective of the type of tutorials I watched and spent more time gaining inspiration outside of the computer.

The best thing?

I no longer had to trade my time (and self confidence) searching for the next tutorial

I listened to my inner creative voice and built a solid foundation meant to last.
I want the same and more for you.

Can this really work? You bet!
Don’t hear it from me - let these artists tell you what they have discovered!

"The clear breakdown of all the different brushstrokes and what each brush can do. And also getting a chance to play with the flat brush in all the ways you suggested. I never had anyone show me how to use a square brush in the way you use it! So good!"

- Crystal Tan

"It was absolute pleasure to be part of the workshop. It really showed me more scope in terms if moving my brush in more than a dozen ways!! For me strokes you showed with flat brush was very interesting."

- Pragya

“I have attended several workshops with Jillian and each time I walk away with a renewed excitement for watercolors. She shares her knowledge and experience generously and makes participating welcoming and fun. Jillian has allowed me to attempt techniques I have not considered, breaks them down to digestible nuggets and makes otherwise intimidating techniques approachable. Thanks Jillian for leveling up my watercolor skills!”

- Allison

"I find it very helpful, especially in the composition of the flowers. It clearly give me a clear idea on how to really try out loose flowers. Also I didn't know flat brush can do so many things!"

Hi, I'm Jillian

And I am a self taught artist so I know how it feels like to spend more time finding answers (than painting)

I am a psychologist turned full-time watercolor artist based in Singapore. I got my first paint sets in 2018 and never turned back. Being self taught was not easy because it meant having to test lots of supplies and sift through information online on my own. The hardest part was realising that I needed someone to give me instructions on how to do something without being able to listen to my inner voice. This is why I have created The Floral Foundation. A space meant to help nurture and build a foundation that allows you to embrace the magic and mess of watercolor

Who is this collective for?

Well... it’s specifically catered for ‘beginners’. Let’s be honest - the word beginner is so broad and vague.

This is why within Floral Foundation, I have crafted 3 stages to help you identify what ‘beginner’ are you.

Who is this collective for?

Well... it’s specifically catered for ‘beginners’. Let’s be honest - the word beginner is so broad and vague.

This is why within Floral Foundation, I have crafted 3 stages to help you identify what ‘beginner’ are you.

The Floral Foundation is for you if you identify with any of these 3 stage avatars:

Stage 1:
The Curious

You have discovered the wonders of watercolor and want to explore.

You aren’t sure if you are doing the right thing and you keep going anyway because this new medium is addictive, relaxing and fun.

At times, you experience overwhelm, confusion, a lack of focus or discouragement when you spend time on tutorials that are not pegged at your level.

Stage 2:
The Wanderer

You want to do more with watercolor and have figured out some of the basic techniques that your materials can do.

You paint along with tutorials and feel some success in being able to create something from nothing.

You discover an online community of like-minded artists and started following specific accounts whose style/ art you like.

You see a gap between where you are and how you wish you can paint - that impatience in wanting to progress faster starts to grow.

Stage 3:
Traveller

You have done your exploring and you are setting a destination. You have a subject that you are keen to focus on and paint more of.

You feel confident about your skills and at the same time there is a recurring nagging thought of ‘am I doing this right?’ lurking in the back of your mind.

You notice internal struggles bubbling from time to time when things don’t work out as you question your efforts.

You notice conflicting information about how watercolor works and are frustrated as you try to connect the dots on your own.

You want to rely less on tutorials and start painting like YOU but are unsure of where or how to start

What members say...

If you are asking yourself...

I have bought other workshops and joined Patreon art memberships that didn’t change the way I painted - why should I join Floral Foundation?

Then let me tell you this:

  • This is nothing like anything you have bought before where my focus is giving you the skills around the ‘HOW’ and your ‘why’ and not the ‘WHAT’.

  • I get how overwhelming the learning experience is for beginners and that’s why I have simplified the learning experience by providing a well-organized platform with categorized content, making it easy for beginners to navigate and focus on what matters most for your practice.

  • Imagine getting a clear learning path that allows you to see tangible progress over time from the beginning while providing you a sense of accomplishment and motivation to paint more and scroll less.

  • I get it – life's hectic. Floral Foundation is designed with your schedule in mind. Progress at your own pace, fitting artistic growth into your life, not the other way around.

  • Gain the opportunity receive constructive feedback on your artwork within a safe and supportive environment that focuses more on just watercolor techniques. You don’t have to do this alone!

A: This space was crafted for you! I will take you through everything from getting started to learning how to paint off a blank page.

A: Write to me at kraftyfox@brushmovement.com or drop me a message on instagram @jillianboonart so that we can connect.

A: The content will focus on florals and floral shapes. The techniques in watercolor can be generalised to other subjects but our focus will be on flowers - and the occasional landscape to help you stretch your creativity.

A: This would be the perfect introduction for you to get everything you need to know ABOUT painting flowers so all the guesswork is taken from you. Plus - getting no formula florals 1.0 means that you get to learn about the essential brush strokes to help you paint loosely.
