Watercolor Redefined - Your Guide to Painting Loose Florals Freely

A course designed to help you apply watercolor techniques with more purpose so that you can stop relying on step-by-step tutorials

If you feel like you:
  • Have dabbled in watercolor and have gaps in your knowledge
  • Are stuck in the hamster wheel of finding the next ‘step by step’ tutorial with little knowledge of how to paint something of your own.
  • are unable to achieve watercolor effects that you want and mostly get ‘happy accidents’
  • know how watercolor works but feel more frustrated with your art the more you follow tutorials online
  • aren’t able to troubleshoot and keep making the same ‘mistakes’.
  • Are relatively new to watercolor and been piecing together fragments of information about watercolor foundations and feel stuck on following tutorials with no clue how best to paint something on your own

Then you are in the right place!
  • As a self-taught watercolor artist - I have respect for others who want to go down the route of piecing together their learning through exploration and ‘google’.
  •
  • I was following tutorials not pegged at my level
  • I was spending a lot of time struggling with the wrong type of supplies and not prioritising the right ones
  • I wasn't sure how to troubleshoot and didn't realize that I was repeating the same mistakes

I was told if I practiced everyday - showed up, I would improve.

The problem was - I was repeating my mistakes.

I was unable to progress and continued to go into the spiral of mistakes I was making in the blind hope that one day - I will:

“Find my style”
“Be able to sell my art”
“Be able to paint loose florals intuitively”
“Run my own workshops someday”
“Be proud of the art I make daily”
“Sustain a creative habit”

These things did eventually happen for me and I say this with pride BUT it was a long road and not always an easy one.

What you see on instagram is 25% of what I create because I made way more messes and mistakes.  I am still proud of my journey because these messes shaped who I have become as an artist and how I teach watercolor.

I’d love to be your guide and help you through this journey. I believe you don’t have to take the same path I did.
You don’t have to do this alone.

I have simplified all the skills required and show you how to apply them with purpose in loose floral painting. This is a course that is meant to set the stage for the long game of watercolor.

You will learn about the stages and milestones that an artist needs to go through in order for you to achieve success in your painting practice.

We can't get from knowing nothing about watercolor to painting a masterpiece. So let's start by moving through the various milestones at your pace - get from sitting up, crawling, walking, and eventually running.

With this course, I want to help you to:

  • Stop relying on step-by-step tutorials and use your knowledge to paint something you are proud to call your own
  • Know the language and terms in watercolor so that you can ask the right questions to help you find the answers you been seeking
  • Realize your inner potential and keep comparison at bay
  • Experience success in a steady manner so that you will start to pioritise art and make it a sustainable creative practice

I want you to become the emerging artist that you are meant to be by guiding you with:

  • Ways to APPLY techniques in watercolor and be more intentional with your loose floral watercolor paintings
  • The STAGES each artist goes through to help you to reach milestones pegged at your level
  • Tools to TROUBLESHOOT watercolor and balance between letting go and controlling your outcome.
I know you want to see your loose floral watercolor skills transform. So I have added modules to boost your confidence and application as an emerging artist:
  • Troubleshooting watercolor to show you how to fix and prevent common bloopers
  • How to tackle your blank sheet of paper - everything related to planning your watercolor in loose floral painting (a prelude to composition)
  • Applying the 5 principles of watercolor in a painting where each principle is broken down and slowly applied to a painting of an "Icelandic poppy"
  • Start to finish paintings of 4 wildflowers and foliage.
Not forgetting the techniques every watercolor painter needs to know, you will discover:
  • Everything about Supplies: From how to get started and care for and maintain the longevity of your supplies to the options available as you go beyond a beginner.
  • The five principles of watercolor to help you paint anything.
  • Basic techniques in color mixing so that you understand components of color.
  • Building a relationship between the materials and yourself so that you can begin with the right mindset.
  • Understanding fundamentals behind flower construction to help you to begin your loose floral journey.
  • Brushstrokes for building muscle memory to help you to paint loose flowers without stressing about which stroke should come next

I have attended a few workshops and no one gives the knowledge and insight like Jillian does! Florals always seem intimidating but Jillian taught so well and gave me courage to try!

Aalekha
"From Flat to Fab" Workshop
Landscape Artist
"I just want to say that I've been painting with watercolor for 6 years and I learned more about watercolor from you today I have in super expensive workshops!

Kirstyn Sanders

The fact that you don’t hold anything back and your organized from step 1 through all the steps. Your teaching style is very easy to follow. I learned more about water control from you in this workshop than I ever have from all the very expensive workshop/classes I’ve taken.

Yvonne Sanders
"From Blobs to Blooms" Workshop

"Love your teaching style because you share such practical and valuable tips..."

"How watercolor concepts are broken down to “everyday terms”; it makes it more approachable and feel (and actually is) doable!"

Allison
"No Formula Florals" Workshop

"Jillian is an incredible teacher. She is kind and humble and always encouraging. I love that she shared the brush strokes so that I can practice them to build muscle memory"

"I could watch her paint forever. I always love how she shows all the steps, including how she dips her brush into the water jar and how many times she wipes it off. I always find other people don't share that and it helps so much. That's always the part that's off camera."

Melissa Deakin
"From Flat to Fabulous" Workshop

"The clear breakdown of all the different brushstrokes and what each brush can do. And also getting a chance to play with the flat brush in all the ways you suggested.

I never had anyone show me how to use a square brush in the way you use it! So good!"

Crystal Tan
"No Formula Florals" Workshop

“The tips and demo with different water ratio on paper was extremely helpful - I never really understood how water and pigments moved and just painted blindly but this technical part of the workshop helped me to understand how to paint better.”

Serene
"From Blobs to Blooms" Workshop

“Having a quick crash course about the type of supplies that Jillian likes best from her years of experience, and more importantly being able to learn how to paint in a stress free & encouraging environment!”

This is a lot of commitment - maybe you just want to take 1 baby step to getting better at watercolor.

This is the first recommended step I would take

This course is for you if you:
- have dabbled in watercolor before and feel like your knowledge in the foundational skills are patchy which results in gaps in your practice
- find yourself unable to intentionally achieve watercolor effects that you want and mostly get ‘happy accidents’
- have an idea of how watercolor works but notice that following tutorials on youtube really leaves you even more frustrated with the process and your art
- feel like your practice is stagnant and you aren’t able to troubleshoot and keep making the same ‘mistakes’.
- are relatively new to watercolor and been piecing together fragments of information about watercolor foundations and feel stuck on following tutorials with no clue how best to paint something on your own

From the time you sign up, you will get 1 year to access and finish this course from 12th June 2023. During this 1 year, you can always go back and rematch, replay the videos in any order.

This course is designed to give a big overview of all the foundational techniques you need to paint loose florals.

In "Watercolor Redefined" I will guide you to translate the techniques in watercolor into practice where we get to paint loose florals and learn how to plan/ tackle a blank sheet of paper.

I also offer "mini workshops" (recorded live workshops) that focus on 1 skill with more depth. This is catered to give you the chance to brush up on certain techniques or skills you struggle with in your watercolor journey.

The mini workshops I offer include:
- "No Formula Florals" - a deep dive into all the brush strokes using 3 different types of brushes
- "From Blobs to Blooms" - everything you need to know about water control in watercolor to help you paint soft florals
- "From Flat to Fabulous" - mastering the art of layering to get your paintings to stand out using monochrome

The mini workshops would compliment your learning after the course if you want to dive deeper into these specific techniques.

You can find out about my mini workshop learning pathway here.

The course and ebook materials are in English Language and at the moment it's the only offering available.

You will get access to my "hello and welcome" module the moment you sign up.
Following which we will be pacing ourselves together from 13th June 2023 for a period of 6 weeks (6 modules)

This is aimed to pace yourself better and prevent overwhelm, the modules will be released weekly so that you can digest the content available to you for each module easily.

Yes! The learning platform I am using has an app that you can download to access the materials on your phone or tablet. Information on how to download this app will be sent to your email upon signing up.

I will be sharing with you a list of materials you can start with. At the same time, I also know that everyone has different resources and access to materials. As such, don't limit yourself to what I recommend, you can always get started with what you already have.

Each week, I will be sending you 1 module from the 12th June. There are a total of 6 modules.

Each module is roughly between 60 to 90 mins long. Depending on how you learn, painting along during the course will benefit your practice and shape your foundation in the long run. I would set aside about 1 hr a week to practice and 1 hr to finish the course content for the week.

You can also give yourself permission to pace yourself in a way that best suits your circumstances. Life gets in the way and slow progress is also - progress!

We will have 2 LIVE Q&A Sessions on week 3 and week 6 to give you the chance to connect with me and ask questions!

This depends on how you feel about your foundation in watercolor. The techniques are straightforward but applying them is another skill altogether. If you find that there are gaps in your learning and you aren't sure how to apply your techniques and troubleshoot, this course might be for you.

This course, I go from basics to beyond beginner to help you to paint with more intention and purpose through applying fundamental techniques in watercolor.

At the same time, I offer other workshops that are catered beyond the beginner - where I dive into fine tuning specific skills to enhance and transform your art. You can find these courses here

Absolutely! This course will be a great stepping stone to help you know everything you need to know to paint loose florals AND apply these skills in a way that helps you be a more intentional painter.

Short answer: No. You can curate your own materials and toolkit according to your budget, skill and what you like to paint. My only recommendation is to consider quality materials regardless of skill as watercolor is a medium that is highly dependent on material choice for you to experience success. You can read more about how to curate your materials in my free toolkit guide here

This depends on what kind of learner you are.

Some participants feel by painting along they get to experience first hand issues and questions can surface which is a good way to learn.

Some participants feel that they rather watch first to see how the demonstration is done and then rewatch again to try apply the skills. This is the magic of an online course - you get to decide.

Sometimes in an in-person workshop, you might have been preoccupied trying out techniques introduced to you and may not pay attention to what was said or done. The online workshop will give you a chance to access the replay so you can decide which skills to zoom in on.

There are several options in the art store and these are some of my favorite that I use for my paintings and workshops.

Paper:
100% cotton cold pressed, 300g watercolor paper, I like arches, bao hong and fabriano artistico best

Brushes:
Black silver brushes round shape, size 16, 6,
Black silver brushes flat shape, size 1"
Princeton heritage brush round size 12 and 8
Princeton Snap brush round size 16

Paint: Holbein professional paints and Sennilier professional paint
You can get the list of other brands I have tried in my free resource.

Due to the digital nature of this course where you can download and consume/ get access to the materials. Refunds are on a case to case basis. I would encourage you to try out the skills so that we can reevaluate if this course was not the right fit for you.

I really want you to like the course and hope that you can get the most out of it depending on where you are at in your journey.

If you are new to my page -
Hello, I am Jillian

Also known as krafty fox

I am a watercolor artist based in Singapore. My 24/7 job is a mother - and I think in watercolor.

My 4 year old would tell you that “my mummy is a painter”.

Painting is a space that I have carved out for myself in the busyness of motherhood. Specifically, painting flowers reminds me of how brief seasons are - just as how each season in motherhood is fleeting.

I believe that watercolor is an art that is best learnt by sharpening your skills instead of following steps

Let me simplify and break down the steps in watercolor to help you go from feeling discouraged, frustrated and making little progress - to gaining trust and clarity in the process.
